Academy Rules for Firefighter II

Attendance

Classroom attendance shall be 90% (or greater) for each subject within a module. If more than 10% of a subject is missed, a written verification is needed from the department to the academy stating that the time has been made up. The Chief of his designate must sign this. Practical attendance shall be 100%. Any missing practical work will require the department to provide written verification that the practical objectives have been met. The Chief or his designate must sign this. If any of the attendance requirements are not met by the night of the module review, the student will not be allowed to challenge the module test.

Classroom

Each student will be graded in three areas, Quizzes, Department Homework, and Practicals. The will also be required to challenge the Illinois State Fire Marshal's certification test for Firefighter II, modules A B and C. Each student will be issued a 4th Edition Essentials text book. The will be required to come to class prepared. This means reading the chapter. The students will be quizzed at the end of each subject. If a quiz is missed, the student must make it up within one week or receive a zero. Instructors may require a pre-test at the beginning of a subject. This will also be counted in the grade point average. Any outside homework assignments will also be counted in the grade point average. A minimum grade point average of 70% must be maintained for all class quizzes during a module. If the student does not maintain this standard, they will be terminated from the academy and denied state certification testing from the academy.

Practicals

Full NFPA approved turnout gear and working SCBA with a spare air bottle will be required for all practicals. If a student comes to a practical without proper gear, they will be sent home. (All SCBAs should be checked before coming to class.) Practicals are graded on a pass/ fail standard. Each student must maintain a passing grade on all practicals. If a student cannot maintain a passing grade, they will be terminated from the academy and denied state certification testing from the academy.

Firefighter II Certification Testing

The Academy will provide testing sites for Firefighter II Modules A, B and C. If a student fails a module test, it will be the responsibility of the department to provide a make-up test and provide the proper documentation to the state. If a student fails two module tests, they will be terminated from the Academy.

Discipline

If a student is disruptive in the classroom or practical, the instructor may ask them to leave. The instructor will notify one of the academy coordinators within 24 hours of the incident. Prior to the student returning to the academy, he or she will meet with the Academy coordinator and instructor. The Chief or his designate from the department will also be required at this meeting. No horseplay will be tolerated!

Graduation

The Academy will provide a certificate of completion for each student who has met the following requirements:

  • Attendance: 90% of all classroom sessions
  • Class Quizzes: 70% or greater grade point average
  • Department Homework: passing grade
  • Practicals: passing grade
